Making Sense Of How Your Back Works

You might not realize how complex the human back really is. We don’t really take the time to understand it, despite the fact that we use it to pick things up, lean over, and lay down on. It’s only when it doesn’t work properly that we appreciate how important having a healthy back really is. This article will deal with the general structure of the back in order to help you to appreciate how it works.

Vertebrae, small bony structures, stack on top of each other like blocks to form your spine. These tiny bones make up what is known as the spinal column, and work together to accommodate your spinal cord, which fits inside through tiny openings in the middle of the vertebrae. The spinal cord is a long tube that runs from the base of your brain down to the tail bone. All of your nerves spring from the spinal cord and branch out to various places throughout your body.

Five distinct sections make up the human backbone including the coccyx or tailbone area, the sacral or pelvic area, the lumbar or lower back area, the thoracic or chest area and the cervical or neck area.

Your spinal column has a natural curve to it which lets you move fluidly rather than stiffly. The soft discs that are positioned in between each vertebra also enhance the ease of movement that we enjoy. There is a soft, spongy center within these discs that provides a layer of protection to the spinal cord, and a harder exterior layer that supports the weight of the vertebrae both under and above it.

There are spaces in between the vertebrae, created by their unique shape, that allow nerves to pass through. These nerves travel to organs, muscles, ligaments, tendons, and skin. Nerve signals run through these fibers from your organs to your brain and back again with astonishing speed that works to keep us safe. For example, the period of time it requires for you to place your hand on a hot stove and then yank your hand away, yelling in pain, is extremely brief.

All these structures combine to comprise what we call “the back”. Though the actual structure of the back is quite clear-cut, pain in the back isn’t so straightforward. There is a complexity to the workings of the back that cause lots of us to experience aches and pains that seem like a mystery. Hopefully, you have now gained a bigger respect for the importance of keeping your back healthy, now that you understand what an essential support structure it is for your body on the whole.
